Under no circumstances, will the Toronto Maple Leafs pick up the club option on Jonas Hoglund's contract for next season, leaving him as an unrestricted free agency for this summer.

(WOW! Post 800....and now post 801. GO ME ) ON the Fan 590... 1: Renberg is seriously considering playing in Sweden next year, saving the Leafs over 2 million plus from his contract I like that. As much as I like Renberg, he's a sweetie, He's also very breakable. two years, less then 15 goals, and has not played a full season, and had a not so good playoffs this year (GWG though) 2: Corson just can't walk away, he has to be bought out; however, since he walked out from the team, how does that factor in? Corson will claim health reasons, the Leafs will claim deseration. though it's only 250,000 dollars. just cut your losses, and let the bum walk away.

The Renberg situation is interesting albeit a little confusing as well. As you mentioned, Renberg is somewhat fragile and to me it was his injuries, as much as anything, that kept him back from better line assignments in the last half of the schedule. That being said, his choice of target here suggests that more than Mr. Corson have it in for Pat Quinn.

I liked Mikael but his play seem to disapear as the year went on. I think it would probably be a good move for both the LEafs and Renebrg himself. He would be able to see much more of his daughter which seems to be real important to him. The Leafs would then have the money freed up!!

Interesting to note. If all the Leaf veterans that have hinted at leaving actually do leave, the budget will have approximately 14.3 million in salary room. (Excluding the cost of Reichel's buyout and not including the qualifying increase). Mind you, the list of players leaving would be substantial; Lumme, Svehla, Corson, Hoglund, Reichel and Renberg. Even taking Svhela and Reichel out of the equation, the figure would stand at better than 8.5 million.

It would be great if Hoglund, Reichel, Lumme and Berg were gone (do you think we could get them to pull Eriksson out of the minors and ship him out too?), but if the good veterans started leaving then I would begin to wonder if Quinn was the reason they were leaving. It's all fine and dandy for the players to say Quinn isn't a problem, but when that person is signing their paycheck that's all they could say, even if it wasn't true.
I've always liked Rennie but he gets injured too easily. I will miss him but maybe him going home to Europe would be the best thing for him. Maybe we could bring back Sergei. That would make both Kelly and me happy. ;D

I forgot Ericksson. Word is that he will be bought out of the final year of his contract. The savings will be about $700,000.

Unfortunately, I've never been able to forget Eriksson due to the blunder he made in the Pre Season Game at Copps Coliseum in 2001 when the Leafs played the Sabres. Word is that he will be bought out of the final year of his contract. The savings will be about $700,000. HOORAY!!! I sure hope it's more than word and is a reality!!! ;D ;D ;D

I do believe we are witnissing a mini revolt of sorts here with the Leafs. It all started with Mats, he left little doubt that he was miffed at the season. He said he is sick of losing out, and sounded like a warning message to ownership. Then the Corson fiasco (although I believe that he came forward only in an effort to try to wrangle a buyout, since if he quit, he gets nada), Wesley commenting on needing defence help, Renberg saying he may not come back if he isn't going to play, even Reichel saying he may not want to come back, added that Svehla wants to reconsider his future. Now, in reality, I do not believe any of these guys want to pass up the gravy train paycheque that is the NHL, and this is a subtle way of criticizing Q without the public crap the Flyers had. This way, if Q retains power they can just say it was the disappointment of losing talking, and they are geared for next year. I agree CL, nothing comes to the surface in TO without being slipped out by an "insider". As we said last year at this time - it shall be interesting times ahead. (life as a Leaf fan, eh)

If the Leafs do not make substantial moves to improve this summer, next season will be Mats Sundin's last in the NHL.

Not me Pam. When I wish to go out incognito I prefer something a little more flamboyant than the mundane deportment of a hockey insider. On my most daring outings, I dress up as a Swiss shepherd boy and sing a little ditty called "Tomgunner's Lament" as I walk the seedier streets of town. ;D

I guess emotions are coming from all angles these days aren't they?? Players who seem to be sick/tired are easy to find. Can't say I blame them. The high of nabbing those at the deadline has certainly been deflated hasn't it?? Vanished would be a better word. The loss of Renberg would be a sad one but his family must be on his mind even more now that he'll have longer to share with his daughter. His production wouldn't be that hard to fill but losing his hustle might not be so easily filled.
