Hip Hats a Big Hit

THE COUNTDOWN for the Maple Leafs' new BB 16 project has begun. Toronto players started sporting the baseball hats with that configuration this week, the BB standing for Toronto playoff legend Bill Barilko, the 16 for the number of post-season wins it takes to earn the Stanley Cup.
The hat is linked to the Tragically Hip song Fifty Mission Cap, which details Barilko's disappearance on a fishing trip after scoring the Cup-winning overtime goal in the 1951 playoffs. The plane he and a companion used was not discovered until 10 years later, the next time Toronto won the Cup and the lyrics to the song are framed in the Leafs dressing room. Ray Bourque and the Colorado Avalanche used the same theme with Mission 16W hats worn during their Cup run in 2001.
BELT BONDA
Early in last night's game BB could've stood for Belt Bondra. Bryan McCabe's thundering hit on slumping Sens sniper Peter Bondra set the tone for an evening of big hits.
"Obviously we have to set the tone in our building," Tie Domi said of his hit on Marian Hossa.
"When the hit's there you've got to make it. When you see the chance to hit their best player, you've got to take it."
Unlike the previous game where the Leafs had been burned on a 5-on-3, they weathered a 47-second disadvantage to salvage the 2-0 lead. Coach Pat Quinn wasn't pleased with how Calle Johansson handled the 5-on-4 after Ottawa tied Game 1, but came back with the veteran Swede and hooked Aki Berg from the lineup to accommodate Ken Klee's return.
Berg rarely has been a healthy scratch, but had not been sharp and used up all his rope with Quinn in the past few games.
