While we wonder (very jusifiably so) about who is going to replace who on the defense, we have to pay attention to the part that also helps win games.
Offense
Quinn has often lauded about how balanced scoring has been the calling card of this team. And I'm not about to ignore that; two years ago, the Leafs had the league high of members of a team that had 20+ goal scorers, 10+ goal scorers, and the only team in the league that EVERYONE had a goal (except the goaltender).
but.
the lack of goalscoring hurt us badly last playoffs, and the same could have been said of this one. They only scored 3 goals or less ALL but one playoff game (the series opener, they won 5-2).
and the regular season...place your peepers on this
LEAFS TOP GUNS SCORING LEADERS Player G A Pts Alexander Mogilny 33 46 79 Mats Sundin 37 35 72 Owen Nolan 29 25 54 Tomas Kaberle 11 36 47 Robert Svehla 7 38 45 Nikolai Antropov 16 29 45 Robert Reichel 12 30 42 Darcy Tucker 10 26 36 Mikael Renberg 14 21 35 Jonas Hoglund 13 19 32
now, the drop from Sundin/Mogliny is drastic. Nolan doesn't count, we got him too late, so the highest scoring Leaf was Kaberle and Svhela. the highest forward is Antropov.
Not good at all.
yes it's balanced, and we're getting goals from anyone, but I don't think the drop off should be that drastic.
Mogliny and Sundin for the most part played with each other all season (PP/PK/ES) but their "Linemates" Antropov, Hoglund, Fitzgerald and Renberg are no where in the equation; EVEN if you factor in Injury Time.
so when we fill out our dance card with defensemen; i think we should pencil in a scorer or two.

Todd Marchant would HELP A LOT! He, plus 2 D-men ( plus Wesley staying-money talks!!! ) is the only thing I want this off season. Lumme, Reichel & Hoglund need to go: Svehla & Renberg will go: ( if Svehla stays, BONUS! ) ===================================== Lumme = replaced by: 1st UFF aquisition Svehla = replaced by: 2nd UFF aquisition Reichel = replaced by: Gilmour Hoglund = replaced by: Marchant Corsen = replaced by: Poni It's not brain surgery.....put me in charge for 1 day, and I would have it done ;D

Marchant is fair game after July 1 he's speedy, and offensive, should be on the shopping list for sure. Gunny, I don't think that Svhela is coming back. I don't know if the Leafs soured him, or whatever, but this is the second year in a row after a season that he's blowing the whole I'm retiring crap. it's getting old, and boring, and we don't need that attitude in the dressing room; it already has cracks.

Calle Johansson:
WOW LAPPIE, do you know you're saying here? The guy is like 183 years old! Actually, he's 36. BUT, he's pretty bad! We do not need another soft player! ================ Ken Klee:
Ahm , he had 1 goal in 70 games this year. ================= I'd rather not have either one of them!

GO ME okay. here comes stats girl We need DEFENSEMEN. no offensemen. McCabe (if he comes), and Kaberle can deal with that. Johanson has a plus minus of 9 this season, pretty good for someone who is 186 years old but I did not realise how old he was. Klee on the other hand has a plus minus of 22. 22 TWENTY TWO! that could pay dividends. It could be just pure luck, but, you have to be pretty sound in your own end, to have a P/M of 22. That's 2 more then Kaberle. v. good number to think about (though the season before was kinda meh).

Ok stats girl...explain this ;D ======================= Jyrki Lumme:
2001/2002 season = Plus 13
2002/2003 season = Plus 10
His career Plus/Minus = Plus 79
Are you saying that Lumme is good in HIS own end? ======================== Plus/Minus is a VERY mis-leading stat!
For example...a D-man like Kaberle, Housley etc etc, will often have a high Plus/Minus....they play the Power Play. Same can be said for our buddy Lumme! PowerPlay time, means that your Plus/Minus WILL increase...no matter how terrible of a player you are. Alyn McCauley may just be the best, or one of the best defensive Forwards in this league, HOWEVER, his Plus/Minus is average at best. He plays on EVERY Penality Kill......where eventually, they get scored on! Alyn's Plus/Minus for his Career, is Plus 5! PenaltyKill time, will drop your Plus/Minus...no matter how good you are on the PK
Lumme = Plus 79 McCauley = Plus 5
Are you saying you'd rather have Lumme on the Ice, or Alyn in a tied game with 2 minutes left, 3rd period??
Stats are nice and good, and often they "do the situation justice", but who-ever came up with the Plus/Minus, needs a kick in the butt ;D. It's about as usefull of a stat as the "hits".

That's 2 more then Kaberle. (though the season before was kinda meh). He was paired with Gonchar. With all his pts (gonchars), its hard not to have a decent +/- rating; a Caps fan told me he was okay this year, solid, stay at home and felt he was a #4 guy. I think hed be a good addition, though.

I always thought that PP and Pk did not count towards Plus/Minus stats ? i could be wrong but I thought it was the case.

You are correct stu. The only time an odd man goal counts towards plus/minus is if it is a shorthanded goal. There is a formula that is used for dmen, I wish I knew it. It combines +/- , ice time and points to come up with a rating. Svehla was rated in the top 5 in the NHL over the last 5 years. His agent referred to it in an interview. That interview, along with Statsny's makes me think the chance of Robert coming back are about 50/50, dependent on what management does over the summer. If he thinks there's a shot at a Cup he'll be back, if not, he'll stay in Trencin.

REALLY If not the NHL, then do they count the Plus/Minus in the AHL? Anyone know?! I know that "somewhere", I just can't remember which league, they count the Plus/Minus from PP & PK. I remember Damion Cox writing a big article on it! I don't really think Cox knows what he's talking about...however, I'm sure he did his research B-4 he wrote the article! Was it the AHL? I know it's not the OHL! Anyone up for some research on a nice, warm Sunday ;D

now I'll never say a bad word about Alyn, but he struggled. Lumme just plain sucks, but there were times where he was good, but to answer the question, Gunny, McCauley before Lumme ANYTIME. (by the way, Lumme scores, and has a lot of assits, compared to Klee who just had a good defense partner, and played solid ) I wasn't saying that Klee could take the number 1/2 spot, more like the 3/4 like ThinkBlue suggested. (I didn't know that he played with Gonchar until this morning). however, Klee or Lumme? Klee or Housley? Klee or Berg? I'd have Klee any time. from what I know Powerplay doesn't factor in to plus minus, but getting scored on ON the powerplay gives you a minus. Scoring a short handed goal gives you a plus. that's it, and I think that filters down on towards junior hockey. If Svhela needs to be convinced that there's a chance that we'd win a cup; then i suggest he "says" he's coming back. More people would opt to come to Toronto if they know they have a number one and a number two defenseman, rather then a barrel of number 4-7's.

Next year could be a positive one offence wise. (Did I really say that??) I'm assuming we get better up-grades to replace Hogie/Renberg. I liked Renberg's style but he was a big burden for Sundin to carry especially with the revolving door of lw'ers. Quinn will be pleased with the D mainly b/c his buddy will be around for another year so I don't know how much time he'll spend looking. It will cert. depend on if he signs either Svehla/Wesley. Even getting one of them will alter our look next fall in our own end. I'm betting McCabe wil be back and you can add Kaberle, Berg, Lumme, (Wesley), and ??. Quinn would be pleased with only 1 spot to fill which will allow him to work his 'magic' and see if Carlo can step up or if a surprise will jump ahead.
On forward even the pick-up of 1 guy could be all he's looking for. Sundin, Mogilny, Nik, Nolan and Roberts are solid. I think he's gotta get a top lw'er for the millionth year to go w/ Mats and Mogilny. A second line of Roberts, Nik and Nolan would be great and a tough winger up on line 1 would cert. benefit the scoring of the other 2. I don't think Roberts can effectively play on the top line but a second duty, especially with solid line-mates, would be just fine for me. That's why I don't think the adding of Marchant would help us that much. Would he be 2nd center over Nik?? Prob. not and that would also mean moving #80 to another spot when it seems fair to say he's got his own line and will def. have the top spot should things continue to peak the next few years. Would Marchant fit as the checking center?? He's easily got the wheels but I don't know much about his aggressive play overall and the cost of signing him might be stupid to have him wasted on 3rd line. I dunno.
