Matt is in a SEDMA (don't ask me what it all means--something,something, Dartmouth Minor Assoc.) for the final games this year. There are teams from over Cda. and they won their first 2 games which were quite nasty. Loads of penalties. Must be the playoff mentality!! Rarer even was his 2nd goal (of the year)[/u] but now they play Ontario this evening. The team he was on won a coupla years ago so who knows?? ;D

Well, the kids hung in tough vs the Ontario team but came up short. In the 3rd, with it out/reach, Matt blocked a shot from the point in THAT spot. He was down for a few minutes for sure but never missed a shift. (Must have ben all those Don Cherry videos we watched when he was little!!) They play today in aobut 1/2 hr and are in a must win set up now.
The refereeing was terrible. Not that it would have made the score any different (these guys were good) but it got to the point where he would call stuff like interference but let every hit to the head go uncalled. You could actually hear the sticks hitting the helments and many kids began to lead w/ their forearms/elbows b/c they all knew he would let it go. UGLY. My buddy and I complained aloud to call the dirty stuf and a woman behind us yelled at us because her kid was a ref as well. I guess she figured she was defending all those refs who are undeserving of fan abuse. I just told here that, since her son was a ref, then she shold know that a hit to the head should be an automatic penalty and not to be defendig a guy who clearly hasn't got the balls to make appropriate calls. She was pretty quiet after that.

It's over!! Lost 3-2 to a team about an hour's drive from here. The guys took MANY uncalled for penalties in the 1st period. Dumb-as-you-could-imagine penalties. Throw in 3-4 10 min. misconducts for equally dumb things and it's a miracle we only lost by one goal. Here's the ironic part: Nobody on our team bench or in the stands complained about the calls. This ref laid the law down from the get-go and wasn't afraid to make the calls even if it meant 5-6 penalties in a row to one team. After the first period was over he went to both benches and (i'm sure) gave them the old i'm-gonna-start-tossing-out-bodies-if-this-carries-over-to the-next-period kinda stuff. And it worked. There were still penalties (luckily my kid only took one dumb-ass one) ;D but the benches calmed down and the game went on as normal. It was the opposite kind of reffing we saw last night. And refreshing as hell. Oh well, the season is over. Matt blocked a few more shots today so he wasn't too worried about his 'area'. Hockey is a great game won or lose.
