Anson Carter the scored game winning goal in overtime as Canada edged Sweden 3-2 to capture the gold medal at the World Hockey Championship. The teams were tied at two goals apiece after three periods and played 20 minutes of four-on-four overtime.
Mathias Tjarnqvist opened the scoring in the game with a backhander past Canadian netminder Roberto Luongo at 10:17 of the first period and Sweden padded the lead when P.J. Axelsson scored at the 18:39 mark.
However, Canada stormed back quickly on a goal by Shawn Horcoff with just 43 seconds left in the opening stanza. Phoenix Coyotes forward Shane Doan scored midway through the third for the equalizer to force the overtime period.
There was no scoring in the second period, but Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mat Sundin had a glorious chance for Sweden on a breakaway only to shoot the puck over the net. With the score tied 2-2, Sundin also missed a second breakaway chance in the third period to put the Swedes ahead. Canada was looking for its first gold medal in six years at the tournament.
Luongo got the call in net after teammate Sean Burke left midway through Friday's semifinal game with a groin injury. Burke was Canada's starting netminder for their last gold medal victory in Finland in 1997. Luongo was in net for Canada for a 6-1 win over Latvia and a 2-0 victory over Switzerland earlier in the tournament before finishing out Friday's semifinal. He sported a 1.98 goals-against average and .918 save percentage heading into the gold medal game.
Sweden started goaltender Mikael Tellqvist, a 23-year-old Toronto prospect. I like the way this kid played, it seems he unseated Salo as the Swedish National netminder.
Canadian captain Ryan Smyth is playing in his 42nd World Championship game - a record for Canadian players - and has yet to win a medal in the tournament.
Congrats guy's!

Things Not To Do in Overtime In a Gold Medal Game 1: Eat; you'll choke 2: Drink; you'll choke 3: Breathe; you'll snort, then choke 4: Hiccup; you'll breathe hard, snort then choke 5: Celebrate and then hold your breath. It causes the heart to go all funny. What a GAME! I watched the middle frame and onward, and dang are those guys good. Sundin had 4 great chances and tons of other ones to break our hearts, thank goodness he didn't. I nearly had a stroke when they went to the ref, and my brother was like why do they do that? and I was like they don't think it went in, so my brother is like, how do we know, and i'm like we need to see the arm go out straight, so we were doing ref moves for 5 minutes. congrats boys!

I didn't watch the game (hockey is still a very sensitive issue) but my buddy said Telly was AWESOME!! Good news to hear for sure. Sounds like Kidd is a good bet to be gone.

Sounds like Kidd is a good bet to be gone. considering that he was 6-0 and had the best goals against after Sean Burke, ya he was amazing. it was really a flukey goal that got him, reinprecht jumped over him, and distracted him, if not for that, it really could have been decided by dun dun daaaa shootout

Congrats to the boys in red and white. A perfect ending, a Canadian gold, and kudos for Mats and Tellan. Maybe if anybody was paying real attention, they realized we may have just seen the FUTURE of our game on Sunday. The entire 20 minute overtime was played 4 on 4. We were treated to an outstanding display of hockey. I don't believe anyone in their right mind would complain about seeing that ALL the time. If only we had a visionary in the head offices. While apurist will say that's not hockey, we only need to study our history a little better. There used to be 7 men on the ice, but when the players got better and faster they took one away to OPEN UP THE ICE. Amazing visionary at that time had the guts to do it. If we are going to have a labour war, let's make it worthwhile, let's make the game better! No more 4 OT snoozefests, this move would eliminate 20% of the poor hockey players in the league, raising the bar for everyone. This is what fans should be sending to the NHL, a clear message that we want the game IMPROVED. Methinks I'll fire an email of the the boys at the NHLF(ans)A(ssociation). Maybe they'll take up the cause.

I don't believe anyone in their right mind would complain about seeing that ALL the time. I'll complain and, if you wanna say i'm not in my right mind, go ahead. It would be the worst thing to happen to hockey. It's only a stones throw from merely becoming an arcade game which, ironically, would be the only hockey i'd be watching on my X-Box. I'm not gonna go into it (it's not even 8 am and my mind, certainly the past month or so, has not been good for hockey thoughts) but 4/4 hockey should always be a novelty idea. Just like solving games with shoot-outs. IMO.

Mikael Tellqvist was outstanding in the games he played and I am not sure that it isn't time he got his shot in TO. I know Belfour has another year on his contract and I know "Can't Win" Quinn thinks he's got a Stanley Cup championship team here but one more year in the minors for the now twenty four year old Swede might in fact, be one year too many.

The 7th player was a Rover, but I have yet to understand what the Rover was all about. Maybe some of you could educate me. I don't like the idea of 4 on 4 all the time. I like the 5 on 5. I guess 4 on 4 is okay for OT but I don't think it should ever be 4 on 4 in regulation. I love the idea of moving the nets back. Moving them was a bad idea in the first place. I also really like the idea of going back to 1 Ref. We don't need 2 Refs asleep on the ice taking up more space. Why should we have 2 Refs asleep on the ice taking up skaters space when 1 Ref asleep on the ice is enough. I'm really happy Team Canada won the Gold. We aren't lucky enough here to see those games. ESPN is interested in other things unfortunately. But I was rooting for them and I was very happy when I saw the post yesterday.

I mean, you really can't trap it, and you have to be defensively sound as sound can be. Also, the skilled players can really play (see: Sundin, Mats) They can't lengthen the ice, which they should have done, or they should do. They can't have 10 (on average) 6 feet, 220 pound guys on the ice, and expect to have awesome hockey. this would also give the smaller players (see: Briere, Daniel etc), to show their stuff as well; size won't be as emphaised as it is right now.

Pammy what is this NHLFA? How does one belong? It's the NHL Fans' Association: www.nhlfa.comThey are the go between for the fans and the NHL. They have made some headway but going up against Buttman and Company it's a long process. The NHLFA is trying to make the NHL realize they need to make improvements for the Fans. Tough job for a group of independent people. Jim Boone and Jim Spendlove are the founders. I like the Idea of 4-4 hockey for everything. I mean, you really can't trap it, and you have to be defensively sound as sound can be. Good arguments, but I'm sort of a purist. The kind of fan that FW was referring to. I might be newer (compared to some of the members) but I haven't liked some of the changes I've seen in the last 7 years. I guess once a purist (MLB) always a purist (NHL).
