Matt called me last night 3 times to say he had the O-K to play. he's more than a bit thrilled b/c he can wear his new $275 skates he got w/ his b-day money as well as his $175 stick he got for free w/ the purchase. he doesn't wear socks in his skates but he said these new ones have ventilation that you can actually feel the air on your feet as you skate. And to think we had to survive w/out life's such (extravagant) pleasures.

The day is here OM. It must be a big day in the OM household. Enjoy it and wish Matt all the best. It is good to see the "younguns" following in the "Orr" tradition of no socks. Many look at me strange as I haven't worn socks in my "Tacks" for over 30 years. Go get'm Matt.

Their team isn't very good but that also means he gets lots of ice-time as they have only 2 d-men in grade 12 w/ the other 4 in grade 10. Good news, bad news!! We're off for a road-trip this weekend a coupla hours away but it'll be nice to see different rinks, do some Christmas shopping and eat some more rink fries!! ;D He loves playing hockey which is a good way to go thru life.

I hope the 2 of you have a great time on this trip. Matt and team wins (I'm being positive). Quality time with your son. Holiday shopping. Sounds pretty good.

They didn't win but we had a good time and had late nights to prove it. The rink was the one that was the home rink of John Sims/Colin White and they have pics up of the Cup celebration fomr a few years back. One of the nicest old-fashioned rinks i've ever been in. (Plus they had great grease-breakfasts for only $4!!) He wouldn't score more than a coupla goals all season but he's solid in his own end and knows plenty of sneaky things that d-men do. He got away with 2-3 wacks on a guy in front/net. I couldn't believe there wasn't any calls as the ref was right there. Hell the second hit deserved a penalty and the 3rd was even worse!! Our seats were pretty well at ice-level and we could hear the ref talking to him after/whistle and (basically) telling him he had used up all his freebies and Matt was quite a bit calmer the rest of the game but that didn't stop us from giggling at him as he went to the bench. He looked up at his defence coach and said "I got away with that one." No kidding. ;D I did find out something interesting later that night: my wife was talking to the def. coach and he told her (he also said not to tell Matt right now as it could screw up team loyalty) that he had pulled hard last year to get him on the team when he was in grade 11. Unfortunately Matt was in between choices and didn't try as hard as he normally did b/c he wasn't sure what team he wanted to play on. Nice to know that the guy thought so highly of him. This week is similiar to every other one: two games in-town and one on Friday a coupla hours away. My wife and I figured we'd better take in as many games as possible as this is his last year in organized hockey. He's been playing since he was 3-4 so we've been to plenty of rinks.

Gerard do yourself a favour and savour the experience, I know when my son quit last year it was more of a blow to me as I truly enjoyed the rink, I miss going to the rink. Yes I took up a seat on the local executive, but I had to step down due to other commitments......

That's exactly what my wife said the other day. I've been so used to going to the rink and spending much of my fall/winter there that the change is gonna be hell. ;D

Like I said it is very hard for me not to be going to an arena, sure I missed quite a few games due to a second job and because of being deployed overseas, but the last year or so I went to every practice and game. Man I miss going to an arena, I have even thought about joining Big Brothers, also after I have my hip problem looked after I am going to be suiting up myself at least once a week to get back into it and have pucks fired at me once again.

Once the rink is in your blood, it's hard to put it behind you. My oldest got fed up with the politics and decided to concentrate on school. (came home with a 92 average yesterday, first report of grade 12) I have dusted off my whistle and am refereeing again SO I still get to go to the rink. He has made whispers that him and I should coach in a couple of years when his school is over. It's in the blood, it never goes away.
