RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
Wilson and his staff have tendered qualifying offers to restricted free agents Jonathan Cheechoo, Rob Davison, Jesse Fibiger, Scott Hannan, Miikka Kiprusoff, Patrick Marleau, Alyn McCauley, Robert Mulick, Mark Smith, Marco Sturm and Miroslav Zalesak. For players making under the league average, the Sharks were required to put in a minimum 10 percent raise. The only player in the group making above the NHL average last year was Patrick Marleau and his qualifying offer was a copy of his 2002-03 salary. Those are offers meant to keep the players' rights, not the actual number the Sharks believe will get the deal completed.
"They have all received their QO's and we've had conversations with all their agents and will continue to do so," said Wilson. "Our goal is to have everyone in camp on time."
Kiprusoff, Marleau, McCauley, Smith and Sturm all have arbitration rights and will have to declare their intentions by July 15 if they have not already agreed to terms by then. Wilson hopes to get term for Hannan, Marleau, McCauley and Sturm on their deals.
Group II free agents not tendered qualifying offers include John Jakopin, Eric LaPlante, Graig Mischler and Marc Kielkucki. They are all now free agents.
Four prospects that had at least three years of pro experience, are over the age of 25 and have less than 80 games played in the NHL have also become unrestricted free agents as the Sharks will not re-sign them by July 1. They are Tavis Hansen, Ryan Kraft, Jeff Nelson and Scott Thomas.
