The new Version of ProBoards won't roll out right away. There is no release date yet because the rewrite will take a long time to do. Patrick has been working on it since May 2003 but as rewrites like this take a very long time to write and then a long time to test to get out major bugs, he still hasn't announced a release date for Version 4. But I thought all of you might like to see some of the new features/improved features Patrick (ProBoards Owner) has in store for V4. These aren't all the changes but they are the ones he has announced so far. Some of them are just for me as Administrator, or for my Moderators, but some of the new features will be for all Members.
This post is actually a combination of 3 separate Posts by Patrick in the Support Center. I've tried not to duplicate some of the ones he mentioned, but here and there one of the items may be a duplicate.
NOTE: Once V4 Rolls out, I will set the Forum up to be in the Eastern Timezone because that is where most of the members reside. (This statement will make sense after you read this post.)
From ProBoards Support:
The next version of ProBoards will not only be a complete rewrite of the board software, but much more. My goals for ProBoards Version 4 is as follows:
The next version of ProBoards will not only be a complete rewrite of the board software, but much more. Goals for ProBoards Version 4 is as follows:
Increased speed
Looking to significantly increase the speed of the forum software.
New features
There are over a hundred new features that are planned for the new version. Yes, you read that right, over a hundred.
New Help Guide
Plan on releasing a new help guide with a great amount of detail on how to perform various functions on the board, meant for users who are new to the boards.
New Web Site Design
The main ProBoards site will be redesigned and have all new content to reflect these major changes.
New features
What are the new features going to be? There are over a hundred new features that are planned for the new version. (Not all of them are listed.)
General Features (10)
Usernames will no longer be case sensitive.
The "cell highlight" hack will become a standard feature of all boards. You will be able to choose what color you want the highlight to be for both the main page and for boards (or you can choose no color to leave it standard).
Karma (optional feature). Each user can have their own karma, which other users can praise or smite a user to increase or decrease the users karma.
Reserved words will no longer effect Administrators and Global Moderators. If a category or board name is too long to fit in the jump, the forum jump at the bottom of the page will cut the name short and put "..."
An option for going to the "home" page of the board will be added to the forum jump.
If a user creates an account with the same username as someone who was deleted, the new user will not be able to edit or delete the older users posts. This will be based on a registration date check versus the time of the posting.
For dates, "Yesterday" will also be added in addition to the already existing "Today." Posts may show up as something like "Posted on Yesterday at 12:22 am"
All email addresses will have spam protection on them which will help make it so that spam bots will not be able to pick up your email address.
Numbers that are displayed such as number of posts on a board, number of posts a user made, etc will contain commas (so 10000 becomes 10,000)
Profiles (14)
Last known IP address of user saved in profile
A notes section will be added so admins/mods can add notes that no one else can see:
Disable / Enable account
Last login date
In addition to member groups, users will be able to have their own custom title. You can choose if you want to see people's signatures when reading threads
You can opt to not display avatars when reading threads
You may choose to not receive any emails from the board administrators (mass emails will not send you mail).
Birthday will become a required field in the profile. As we do not allow users under the age of 13, an age check will be in place which will remove accounts of users under this age.
The server times will no longer default to east coast time. Everything will be based off of GMT. All user profiles will be updated accordingly to keep them in the correct time zone. Location will be shown in mini profile
Registration date shown in mini profile.
The "notification" screen will have its contents moved to the profile area. Clicking on "profile" at the top will allow you to view your profile. An option to edit your profile will be on that page.
View Members (1)
In addition to our current options, a photo-album mode will be added which will display users with their avatars.
