What with the Svehla Soap Opera with the Leafs, and this Soap Opera with Hasek, I'm beginning to feel like both Svehla and Hasek are cut from the same cloth. I'm getting to the point where I hope Hasek comes back and then Detroit trades him to some very weak team. A team he can't do much with. If Svehla returns mid season, hope the Leafs do the same to him. I'm really getting fed up with this false retirement stuff. www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=46610&hubName=nhlD-day in Detroit TSN.ca Staff 7/7/2003 The Detroit Red Wings could learn today or tomorrow whether or not they have a goaltending controversy on their hands. Dominik Hasek is expected to inform agent Rich Winter and the Red Wings this week about his plans for the upcoming season. If Hasek decides to end his one year retirement, the Red Wings will attempt to unload one of their high priced netminders. Both goalies are set to earn $8-million next season. Curtis Joseph, who was signed last year to replace Hasek, has a no-trade clause in his deal. Agent Don Meehan has refused to say whether or not he would waive it in order to give the Red Wings some more options. Detroit has received trade offers for Joseph and team owner Mike Ilitch has said he would entertain offers for Hasek as well. General manager Ken Holland indicated last week that the Red Wings would be willing to take "somebody who's maybe making a little bit too much money in another market" as part of any potential trade.

Even the Fan590 report suggested that Domi was upset at Svehla for not making a decision...so even if he does come back - what does that do for team chemistry?

so even if he does come back - what does that do for team chemistry? I was thinkin' the very same thing the past few days. Does he really think that the boys are gonna be giving him high-5's when he shows up for the first time?? Many have busted their asses for YEARS (Domi immediately comes to mind) so they have earned respect. What has Svehla done?? That's another reaosn why they should dump him regardless and sign a coupla guys and go on. ps...Joseph WHO??

Team chemistry is one thing but these overpriced atheletes seem to forget very quickly. I remember Thomas K. holding for a while and to me he almost seemed like a hero to the boys when he came back. But I agree...is he going to play hockey or golf. Even my 4 year old can make up her mind! ;D

i think Kaberle and Svhela's situation are totally different.
Kaberle's was a qualifiation offer, which he denied, and wanted more money; and I think this was after his good two years with the Leafs, so understandably so.
Svhela, a person who's retired more times then Elvis Stojko and Todd Eldridge combined, keeps doing it to get more money for his Dulka Trecin team and for himself. Florida got fed up with it; and Toronto admittedly said they payed more then what he was worth.
Now; let's just chronicle this little saga
1: leafs get eliminated; svhela announces he's THINKING about retiring (1), rumours are surfacing that renberg wants to go back to sweden because of ice time
2: leafs qualify svhela.
3: svhela retires (2)
4: media implodes, and svhela is thinking about it
5: svhela is coming back
4: media reports it; and all we have to worry about now is wesley
5: svhela changes his mind, he's retiring again (3)
6: svhela thinks about it again
7: svhela changes his mind; and says that he will re-negoiate his contract with quinn (5 million with 2? million going to D.T.)
8: talks fall through, svhela retires (4)
9: Watters talks to him directly. Belfour and Sundin talk to him. Quinn talks to him. Svhela REALLY likes the way Quinn coaches, it's old school and all.
10: it's up to his children.
11: Svhela is retired.
12: svhela will not sign his retirement papers because he might come back; though he REALLY likes his jobs in D.T. as an assistant coach and as a director of player something or other...
13: he won't sign the papers (again) because he might want to come back in september; not quite sure. just want to keep the option open.
here's a thought
svhela's a selfish person. not selfish because of the money; but selfish because of what HE is doing to the team. HE said that he wants to see changes to the team. what fricken changes is there going to be, if svhela doesn't say he's for sure coming back. the end of story. use your sense man!
if he's so happy with his job. retire for a year; and then (hopefully) play in the half season next season.
he will not be recieved with open arms, especially by Belfour, and Domi.

Just heard the Jos. will waive the no-trade clause but it's conditional. Most likely to only include a few teams. LinkDETROIT -- Curtis Joseph has accepted his fate, realizing Dominik Hasek has replaced him as the starting goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings.
Joseph has agreed to waive the no-trade clause in his contract and is prepared to move on, his agent said. But he'll only accept a trade to a city and team that meets his criteria.
"He's very disappointed but he's realistic," agent Don Meehan said Tuesday, several hours after Hasek announced during a teleconference that he was returning to the Wings after his one-year retirement. "(Joseph) understands you have to be flexible and move around in your life. He's resigned to the fact that it's Detroit's intentions to trade him."
While the Wings upgraded the position by bringing back Hasek, who has six Vezina Trophies (top goaltender), two Hart Trophies (NHL MVP), an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup championship, they're also in a quandary with Joseph, who has two years and $16 million remaining on his contract and won't be easy to trade.
"Ideally, as quickly as possible we'd like to get a goaltender moved. That's easier said than done in today's climate in the NHL," Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "Both (goalies) are well-paid. I'm going to have to be creative in order to put (a trade) together."
The Wings have been shopping Joseph for more than two weeks. Owner Mike Ilitch said last week that the club has received some offers for him.
Only a few teams -- the New York Rangers, Boston, St. Louis and Colorado -- are believed to be in the market for a goalie. The New York Post reported that the Rangers, possibly as a prelude to a trade for Joseph, are trying to deal goalie Mike Dunham to Boston.
Meehan said Joseph will consider several factors before approving a move, including the quality of schools in that city. He would also prefer to play for a Cup-contending club. Meehan said the Wings have discussed some potential trade destinations with him but it doesn't appear they're close to making a move.
Meehan said Joseph would prefer that a deal gets done quickly, but added, "Only if the conditions are right. Timing isn't an issue."

This is a triple wammy for Cujo. First the Olympics, second the Leafs, now third the Wings. He should have settled for what the Leafs wanted to pay him. He probably wouldn't be job hunting if he had (but I am glad he didn't stay).
IMO, the Avs would be pretty dumb to trade for Cujo. The only way the Avs could win the Cup with Cujo in their net is is the rest of the team won it. They would win it in spite of him being in their net. Maybe he should go back to St. Louis since they can't ever seem to get out of the Conference into the Finals.

OK,
CUJO has not won a cup for a team. HOWEVER, he has also NEVER lost a cup for a team.
He never "blew-it" as a Leaf. The Leafs as a team have not been good enough. He's the reason the Leafs made the playoffs for several seasons. There's no denying that. He's the reason the Leafs made it out of rounds 1 and/or 2 the past few years. HOWEVER, he was sooooo da*n tired from being over-played during all the seasons in T.O., as well as facing 30 plus shots a night...that he ran out of gas every year.
With Detroit this year, he did not blow it. THEY ( Detroit ) did. Giggy was hot. Detroit was out-played & just plain old. Also, obviously, their new coach is no Scotty Bowman.
CUJO had a .917 save %.....and a 2.07 GAA
You put him on Colorado, and he'll be just fine. He's not the best goalie in the league, yet, he'll not "ruin" a teams chances to win the cup. Who else could the Avs get?
Lets be realistic here.....with the exception to this year in Detroit, CUJO has NEVER, EVER been on a legit Stanley Cup contender. The Leafs were not, Oilers were not....St.Louis was not.
How do you think Brodour or Roy would do on a average, or slightly above average team? Brodour would have NO cups. Roy would have 1 cup. I believe HE won the cup back in '92 ( I think ) for Montreal.
Saying that signing CUJO would eliminate a team like the Avs from Stanley Cup contention is wrong. We may like, or dislike him....but on a "great" team like Colorado, he'd be just fine.

Tom the cookies just don't crumble for Joesph.
okay
you can argue that he wasn't on a GREAT team with the Leafs. however. you have to point out that lets say for the 20 games they played the year before, he stole, 5
that's 2 per round. (or in this case games 6/7 in Ottawa series, and the whole 3 wins in Carolina, because the Leafs were just too tired at that point).
HOWEVER.
how many times did he blow up? (New Jersey: Five Goals Against). it wasn't like this year when the Leafs blew up (though Belfour totally lost it in the second period; but totally do not blame him). these were shaky goals, like he didn't believe that he could stop them.
it happened before it happened in detorit (but they didn't score; not really his fault, out of the 10 goals though 5 were iffy).
he crumbles when the spotlight is on.
Olympics (whatever anyone says about them, Sweden for the most part was just thrown together too. So was USA, and Russia, et.al. i'm assuming they were all iffy; HOWEVER, the goalies showed up. Joesph did not).
or the Canada/World Cup, where he blew up in the gold medal final.
the writing is on the wall for Joesph. now if he DOES win a cup and plays better as the pressure builds, ducky for him; honestly.
however he could play on the best team assembled, and not have it. he showed that nearly 24 months ago.
