www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=46728Wesley headed back to Carolina TSN.ca Staff 7/8/2003 Free agent defenceman Glen Wesley has signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes, TSN has learned. Sources say the deal is worth $2.75 million plus bonuses. Wesley played most of last season for the Hurricanes but was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the deadline. He had indicated he wanted to return to the Maple Leafs but wasn’t able to reach an agreement with Toronto. Wesley, 34, is entering his 17th season in the National Hockey League where he’s recorded 500 points (124 goals, 376 assists). Wesley was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 1987 after spending four seasons with the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ****!

Here's the Sportsnet version: ====================================== Wesley snubs Leafs, returns to 'Canes
The lame duck management of the Toronto Maple Leafs couldn't sign their top defenceman from last season's playoffs.
RALEIGH, NC - Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has signed defenseman Glen Wesley to a one-year deal.
"We are very happy that Glen has chosen to return to Carolina," said Rutherford. "He's been an important part of our team and a leader on the ice for a long time. Glen is respected by his teammates and is active in the Triangle community. We believe his return further solidifies our defense heading into this season."
Wesley (6' 1", 205 lbs.) split the 2002-03 season between Carolina and Toronto, totaling 11 points (1g, 10a) and 44 penalty minutes in 70 games. Carolina dealt Wesley to Toronto on March 9 in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He played seven regular-season games and five playoff games for the Maple Leafs, averaging more than 27 minutes of ice-time during Toronto's seven-game first round defeat to Philadelphia.
Wesley, 34, played in nine seasons for the Hurricanes organization and ranks third in franchise history in games played with 629. Wesley scored 190 points (47g, 143a) and totaled 434 penalty minutes in his career with the franchise. He has played 1,173 total games in the NHL, tallying 500 points (124g, 376a) and 859 penalty minutes.

I can't blame you Tom. It really looks our management is doing...(trying not to swear) squat this off-season. I mean, look at the contract he signed, how could they have a problem with that kind of contract? Oh God I can already envision our paper-thin blueline next season, I don't think DeVries will even make much of a difference now.

Good pickup by the Canes. Wesley is an excellent defensemen and he will be missed here in Toronto.
I won't comment on the Leafs in this matter, as to claim that they dropped the ball would indicate that they were capable of holding it in the first place.

Now this hurts. I really wanted to se Glenn back. Forget Svhela I wanted Wesley. Also they gave up a second round pick for about 20 games? If that? Boy this stinks.

Old Marshmellow Balls did it again!! Or he didn't do it. How ever you want to look at it. If I used the words here I wanted to use, I would have to ban myself from the Forum. What the H E double LL are the Leafs doing, or not doing!! This is just more of the same old from last year's offseason. We will probably hear a rerun of last year's excuses before this is all over. "Oh be patient. We want to win the Cup. We plan on improvements." Bull you know what!! This is outrageous!! LT where the blue blazes are you! If you want to bring the Cup back to Toronto, you are going to have to do better than this. Get some DECENT Management in our organization and Fire Peddie's @$$ while you are at it! If the Leafs don't sign some good Defensemen soon, next season will be history before it even starts. Alyn McCauley will be a lot better off in San Jose than he would be in Toronto. Hopefully with more ice time on the Sharks than he got on the Leafs and with a better role in San Jose, and the fans here loving him, he can be happier here than he was on the Leafs, especially since the Leafs don't appear to be trying to build a Cup Contender any time soon. This is the last time I will believe any owner of the Leafs!!

okay
why wouldn't he sign a 3 year deal plus an option in Toronto for a little less then 3 million but signs a 1 year for about 2 and a half million?
maybe in the end, he wanted to go back to Carolina. the family situation or something.
don't go slamming Quinn on this one guys. his nose is dirty, but something smells rotten

Just got back from my ball game to read this. I'll sit/stew and not make any real comments. We got what we deserved. AGAIN.

Who knows, Wesley may have tried to do a lesser deal with the Leafs too before he gave up. I have an idea we won't ever hear the entire Wesley story. We have a lot of built up frustration. I don't have 36 years worth, but I have enough frustration too, so that this is just the straw that broke the camel's back (at Management not the team).

Wesley was the best Leaf defenceman last year in the playoffs, when it mattered most. Not flashy, but da*n dependable. Never made a mistake, and the best passer out of the defensive zone by far.
Regardless, the stupid Leaf management kept telling Wesley that they were waiting to see what Svehla is doing. Well, I guess he just got tired of waiting. Now, we'll probably lose Svehla too. Richard Peddie has stated time and again that priority #1 is to shore up the blue line. Signing Wesley would have helped. Hell, the guy actually wanted to play in Toronto. I don't know why, but he did.
So now, the Leafs have ignored 3 quality Free Agents in Marchment, Neuiwy, and Wesley, who were actually willing to take a pay cut to play here. Stupid, stupid men. And where is Quinn today? In bloddy BC on vacation. There isn't much more room up your arse for another set of golf clubs there, Pat my boy. But, by God, I'll make them fit.!!

Shaner, this is exactly what Quinn did last year. He vacationed in Vancouver and left Peddie, Watters and Dryden in Toronto to all give out conflicting reports on who they would try to sign during the off season. Then came Quinn's excuses of "I tried but couldn't get anyone." I'm sure he is going to come up with excuses this year if they don't sign any Quality Defensemen, except this time he can't say "I tried but couldn't get anyone." Maybe he took this vacation so he could try to think up a good excuse, one he thinks will be good enough that we will be dumb enough to believe, for them not signing anyone.
