Many know that my son went to Edmonton a few months ago. Even got a job (electrician) 1st day there. Him, and his 2 buddies, all got jobs in a blink and are making GREAT money (esp. when your barely 20). I talked to him tonight, as usual on Sunday, and even he was excited over his latest bit of good news.
His boss took him off one job site and, in the drive to the new one, told him he'd be getting a nice raise asap. His boss told him it's not hard to find guys to work for $15-$20 an hour but that he liked his 'work ethic' and the fact that he wasn't like many who come 'out west' looking for work. Many are just there for the money but never try and better themselves in the process. It's all about the paycheque and how fast they can spend it. It's an easy trap to fall into.
Matt said he'll even have a guy to work under him at this new site and his boss will pick him up in the morning and take him back home afterwards since he doesn't have a vehicle yet. Needless to say he was surprised and thrilled by the entire talk. His boss said to keep it quiet till all the details have been finalized but it's sure nice to get recognition. Esp. when it's unexpected. Just goes to show you you're being watched even if you don't realize it. He even said the owner even called him into his office and said how much he liked him.
The only downside is that he can't get any vacation time for a whole yet but that's small potatoes compared to the rest. I never would have had the initiative to move away from home and begin a career. (It's a good thing it skipped his generation.)
