After 8 1/2 years of living in Southern California, I hate it as much as I did in year 1, so on occasion I have to visit my old stomping grounds. Monday was a U.S. Holiday so I took last Friday off as a Vacation day and flew up to San Jose so I could spend time in Santa Cruz. I let Alan know in advance I would be there. He let me know on Saturday morning there weren't any morning family plans for the day, so we got together for lunch. We talked Leafs, Sharks, Hockey, Movies. We both wish the NHL would put the California Schedule for the Leafs to be in San Jose on Saturday again like they were doing before so Jim could fly out and go to the game with us. In January of 2008 when he flew out with his daughter and I flew to San Jose we had a really good time.
Saturday was overcast and chilly until late afternoon when the sun finally broke out. Sunday and Monday were sunny. I had a really good time at lunch with Alan and would have liked it to last longer but he was taking his Nephew to see Avengers, so we had to make it a semi long lunch.
I'm really not a Beach Person, but Santa Cruz has a special pull for me. Its really the only Beach that I feel this way about. I think it goes back to my first visit to Santa Cruz - at 3 1/2 years old. I still remember all the Beach Umbrella's in the sand and all the people and the color of the Water. My mother told me this next part but I don't remember it. However, it, along with the umbrella's and water are probably why Santa Cruz has such a pull for me. I wanted to go on the Big Dipper Roller Coaster but my mother had a bad heart condition so she couldn't go on the Coaster. When I was 3 1/2 they didn't have height restrictions on rides. A woman told my mother she would take me on the Coaster. My mother told me a loved the ride so much I wanted to go again. I stopped going on the Coaster at 18 because it bothered me on that first dip down. Loved it at 3 1/2 and hated it at 18. Go figure!!
It was a good weekend. I felt at home. And I definitely enjoyed the lunch with Alan. For years I had hoped to have a Leafs fan relocated from Canada to the area that I could become friends with. Wouldn't you know it, 6 1/2 months before I have to move South (to remain employed instead of on unemployment) it finally happens and I have to move. I still hope to move North again someday.
It was great to see you again, Alan. I enjoyed the time with you. You're a good friend.
