TSN had an article a day or two ago that both the Leafs and Flames were looking at Harmonic. The Leafs probably backed out of talks because the price was too high. He isn't worth 2 firsts and a second, so I'm glad the Leafs didn't get him.

Hamonic is a top 4 dman but more of the Jake Gardiner ilk. He has his moments but isn;t an allstar by any stretch. Definitely Not a top pairing guy,and thatse a huge price to pay for a middle of the road guy. We already (in theorey) have Zaitsev and Polak on the right side, and really need a top pair guy, so Hamonic didn't seem a good fit to me, and definitely not worth a first and two seconds.
Burke is famous for building form the net out, and that's exactly what he's doing in Calgary. Hamilton & Eliot, now Smith, now Hamonic. The problem with his method is that he isn't a cup contender and he keeps trading all his future away (picks) At some point this catches up to you.

Brad Treliving is the GM in Calgary, aside from Burke (President of Hockey Operations) meddling in team affairs those should all be GM decisions. Shanahan has a vision as the President and Alternate governor of the Leafs, but he generally allows his management personnel to do their assigned jobs and defers to their expertise. Brian Burke as President of Hockey Operations is in an advisory position that falls between the President(Owner) and the GM (Trevliving) with little to no direct influence on day to day hockey decisions.

Maybe so, but the moves Calgary have been making smack of Brian Burke. FYI, Apparently, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday, the Leafs had purposed a package trade of James van Riemsdyk and a 2018 first round pick for Hamonic’s services. editorinleaf.com/2017/06/25/toronto-maple-leafs-heres-reported-offer/If true I'm glad the deal was turned down. JVR > Hamonic never mind the fact that a first was included.

If that's the price for a top four dman I'm not sure that's the route Lou and co. go. I realize we have the kind of assets that could land a guy like this but IMO we need a bigger physical presence on our blueline. I like we are being patient. The type of dman we need is specific so it's prudent to make all inquiries about availability. I have a feeling they might go after Kulikov as a UFA. Hunwick and Polak may still be an option. I just can't see Loù overpaying unless it fits the plan. An under 30 veteran with size, nastiness and speed IMO is exactly what we need. Finding that is the challenge.

I think they might be working with Vegas on a deal still, probably for Colin Miller, but possibly for Methot.
I'm glad they didn't pay JVR plus a first for Hamonic. Definitely more than I think he's worth.
