With the trade deadline a lot of new players have all of a sudden been rumored to be on the block. When at first you look and think of the skill they bring to the table, the initial thought may be, heck yeah i want that guy on my team. But then you need to look at the contract, and the contract may hinder a players value. So I thought it would be fun to look at players value by style/position. (The leafs players are not necessarily up for trade, but in for comparative purposes. )
Defensive "Pest" energy player Brendan Gallagher: 3 more years at 3.75 per year Leo Komarov: UFA (2.95) Zach Hyman : 3 more years at 2.25 per year Dominick Moore UFA (1 per)
My take: Galagher is the best player, but anything over 2.5 is too high a price to pay for this kind of player. Hyman gives the best value here.
Center Joe Thornton UFA 8 per Paul Stastny UFA 7.5 per Henrik Sedin UFA 7 per Mikhail Grabovski UFA 6 per John Tavares UFA 6 per Valterri Filppula UFA 5 per Tomas Plekanec UFA 5 per Lars Eller UFA 4.75 per Josh Bailey UFA 4 per Tyker Bozak UFA 4 per
My take: Taveres is obviously the best guy per $ hands down however, after comparing this list, I have to say I think Bozak is providing value. Aside from Taaveres I don;t think I'd trade straight up for any of the others given the extra cap hit.
Scoring Winger Rick Nash Pending UFA (7.8 per)
Daniel Sedin: UFA (7 mill) Evander Kane: UFA (5.25) Galchenyuk: 2 more years at 4.9 per year Max Pacioretty: 1 more year at 4.5 per year JVR: Pending UFA (4.2 per)
My take:
Nash and Sedin are older and way overpaid for what they provide today. Galchenyuk and Kane are not nearly as good as the $ they are paid. Pac and JVR are close in skill and in $. JVR is having the better year by far.
Defensemen Drew Doughty: one more year at 7 Erik Karlsson: one more year at 6.5 Oliver Ekman-Larsson: one more year at 5.5 Paul Martin: one more year at 5.5 Jack Johnson: Pending UFA (4.35 per) Niklas Hjalmarsson: one more year at 4.2 Jake Gardiner: one more year at 4.05 Erik Gudbranson: UFA (3.5)
My take: Defense is probably the most interesting because so many guys with term left are rumored on the block. I'm not as down on Gardiner as most but theres not a guy on this list I don;t take over Gardiner even with cap considerations. This leads me to believe he is probably overpaid.

yeah I am not as down at Jake either. Many brain cramps which really stand out but other times he can be quite a catalyst.. Also really good at getting back to retrieve pucks... Josh Bailey anyone?

Same here. I know he has brain cramps but I've always liked him because he does good things too. A number of years ago when the Leafs were pretty bad, when I was at all 3 of the games of their California road trip, Jake was the only one who was getting the goals for the Leafs. He did other good things in those games too and I have been in his corner every since that California road trip.

Well we all know how I feel about Jake so won't go there. All 3 of our UFAs have value to other teams looking for different needs. Leo is a great pest, Bozak a very good 3rd line centre both ways and faceoffs, JVR is a big presence in front of the net with soft hands. While I have said on many occasions I like all three of these guys but getting value for them over letting them walk away will keep the rebuild moving forward. I understand that dealing even one or two of these guys could disrupt this current team but we need to look at the big picture as I'm sure Loù and Shanny are doing. With the way we have been playing of late Loù might see more value in moving these guys rather than keep them. It's gonna be very interesting . Just hope that long term goals are still the focus. I don't think we have a Cup contender yet.

So my take is that next year
1) Leo can be replaced by Soshnikov for his pestiness, but really he is replaced by Brown as a third line winger. Brown is just as good defensively but has more offensive upside.
2) Bozak can be replaced by Nylander at center, with Kappinen slotting in at RW. Who plays with who still t be sorted out. We'll miss Boxak's faceoff prowess, but more and more you are seeing Mathews take over the critical faceoffs anyway.
3) JVR is propably replaced on the top line by Marleau short term, and hoping one of Leivo, Aaltenen, Andreas Johnssen, or Adam Brooks develops into a top six guy over the next couple of years.
So in theory they are all move able, but JVR is the toughest to replace.
I can also see the other UFA Dominick Moore getting moved at the deadline . Gauthier is ready and may already be the better option as a 4th lie center.

Wish we could move Marleau at the deadline and find a way to resign JVR

Wish we could move Marleau at the deadline and find a way to resign JVR I understood the reasoning for Marleau at the time. (Expiring contract when Mathews hits his home run). But the way things are playing out, it really seems like signing JVR would have been doable without Marleau's contract. Having said this I think Marleau has more to offer than we've seen. Marleau is wasted on a checking line. I'd much rather see him play with Marner or Nylander.

I agree bwf. Marleau will prob hit 20 goals again but he's also very durable, still got speed, can play centre, great mentor in room and a great pro. He's been in big games before and can find another gear when needed in a big game. Leafs are not locked in long term. I think JVR could net us a first rounder easy.
