Not exactly. Sens kept 1.75 million of the contract. I think this is a great deal for the kings. They get a solid defensemen in PHaneuf at a much more reasonable 5.25 per year for 3 more years. PAy more in line with his real ability as a 3/4 guy.
The sens get a 36 yr old aging star who hasn't scored even 25 points in 3 years. When you tack on salary retention they are effectively stuck paying Gaborik 6.6 million per year for 3 more years. That is a sh1t ton of money for 25 points per year.
I don;t really know much about the minor pieces getting swapped. Hopefully Nate Thompson is garbage and Nick shore is an elite prospect, otherwise this looks really really bad for the sens IMO.

True. I'll be honest, I don;t think the whole salary retention thing is logical. Or at least it isn't given proper value by some. Deon Phaneuf with a 5.25 price tag is worth a lot more than the sens got for him IMO. I would equate Phaneuf at 5.25. to the leafs trading Zaitsev. We'd want a whole lot more in return than a 36 yr old overpaid winger and mid level prospect. I still think back to when buyouts and salary retention started. The leafs had signed Tucker to what was at the time an enormous 3 million per year for a 3rd line player. Then they bought him out and had to pay 1 mil per year for 6 years. Instead of Tucker we had a bunch of other equivalent guys making ~ 2 million per year in his place. Net we we're still paying 3 million for the position. So what was the point? I would have rather had kept Tucker on the leafs.

As much as I disliked Phanoops the Kings won this deal big time imo. Gaboriks best days are way behind him.
