I struggle with this one. Yeah Cherry directed his anger on one sector of the population and that was inappropriate. I think the problem may be more youth in general and not specifically immigrant youth. But I think the real message he was trying to convey was for everyone to get off their high horses and go buy a poppy to support the troops and on this message I have to say I agree 100%. www.thestar.com/news/canada/2019/11/11/don-cherry-fired-from-sportsnet-following-toxic-rant.html

The whole world has gone so PC. Call me an old fart but I’m just getting tired of all the snowflakes whose feelings get hurt at the slightest things. Maybe it’s time for Cherry to go but not on these terms.

The message was correct, the delivery was not. When my kids make inappropriate comments I stop them immediately and if necessary they apologize to the person who they were talking about ... Ron MacLean was the adult on the set and he didn't bring Grapes back from the brink. I'm probably about 5 or 6 years of fast-forwarding the 1st intermission because Don was out of touch with his rantings. I still like the guy, but it was time for him to move on 5 or 6 years ago. Hopefully the broadcast can move forward from this and find someone who won't imitate Cherry but provide similar insights and commentary for the replacement Coach's Corner segment. Behind the Mask isn't it though... If they still want to use Kelly Hrudy, maybe change the segment from Behind the Mask, to Off the Cup.

I just read about this on my Google Home Page news stories. I agree with Cap'n it was time for Cherry to go, at least 5 years ago, but not this way. I agree with Cherry about people not buying poppies, but NOT the way it was presented. I agree because both our countries were founded on immigration, BUT more importantly because aiming at immigrants is Totally Racist. As bwf said, it should have been aimed against the youth in general and their lack of understanding what wearing the red poppy stands for. But this wasn't the first time Cherry was racist Remember when he said the only really good players were from Canada, and when he said something to the effect only European and French wear visors?
I have wished for years we wore the Red Poppy for Veterans Day (on same day as Remembrance Day) like Canada does for Remembrance Day. I have always thought it was a cool way to honour our Veterans of the past and present. I think it's a great tradition in Canada.

Don Cherry never left the 50's. He was a racist dinosaur that should have been fired years ago. Call me a snowflake if you want but good riddance to bad rubbish!

I really dont care one way or another. It doesn't affect my life whatsoever. But social media will blow this way out of proportion and everybody will name call one another until it blows over and someone else gets bigger headlines. Vicious circle.

I was having trouble understanding what it was he said that was so bad compared to all kinds of other things he has said. He has always made racist inappropriate comments. He belittles players for not playing the way the game was played in the 70s despite the fact the game has changed. He hates on Europeans and French Canadian players as well. I guess it has all caught up to him.
I think the issue isn't just that he is generalizing that immigrants aren't buying poppies. It's how he spoke while making that generalization. "You guys" etc. It singles them all out and also lets every white Canadian born in this country off the hook for not also buying a poppy.
I still enjoy hearing him talk about hockey. Part of the fun is hearing him say stuff he shouldn't be saying. It's kind of funny hearing how wildly inappropriate he can be. I have no interest on his take on politics and outside of when he talks about hockey plays I don't respect his opinion.
He probably should have been taken off the air years ago...possibly even more than the 5 or 6 years people on here have suggested. The funny thing is he could have kept his job if he just apologized or made a statement that wasn't as racist. Instead, he said that he meant what he said pretty much giving Sports Net no choice.

I'm torn a bit on this.. Now I stopped watching him years ago. I used to love coaches corner.. But got real tired of his rants and his prejudice against Swedes and Russians etc. Purposely pronouncing their name wrong. Or his hate on French Canadians. I thought his love for his country was 2nd to none and thought it was really nice how he would end segments with a tribute to a fallen hero weather it be a police officer, a fireman or military. Or young kid who was tragically killed or passed away.. I thought a lot of his views on hockey were outdated... But he would go off script and spew some hate towards others or push his politics out there. I just got tired of it. I chose not to watch.. That is a choice many had... So to be surprised at what he said or more importantly how he said it should not come as a shock to anyone.. I wont miss him because I stopped watching him anyway.. But I feel for those who grew up listening to him and couldn't wait for period 1 to end to listen.. But in the end I think he wore out his welcome..

Betting indicators have Brian Burke as the odds on favourite to be the Coach's Corner successor to Donald S. Cherry
I sure hope not... I hope they dig a little deeper and find someone that is not past their expiration date.
If they bring in Burke, I'd rather they rehire Cherry.

Ugh! In his own way, blowhard Burke is just as bad, just in a different way. When SN has him on the Sports Desk in intermissions it really irks me at the garage he spews.

Burke vs Cherry? It won’t be long before we’re sick of Burke. IMO Sportsnet was looking for a reason to can Cherry. Either way I don’t care. Just sick of the way these type of things get played out on social media, the name calling and stupid opinions of many are in poor taste.
