I wanted to keep this separate and honestly, I'm likely way too early... for that I apologize.
In 2008 the NYR had 2007 1st round draft pick, Alexei Cherepanov pass away at the age of 19 while playing in a KHL game. At the 2009 entry draft they were awarded a compensatory draft pick from the NHL in the 2nd round. (#47 - selected Ethan Werek)
A Luc Bourdon comparison isn't valid, since Luc had 36 NHL games and 41 AHL games on his stat line prior to his untimely passing.
This is taking a long way to say that by Kyle Dubas signing Amirov to his NHL entry-level deal last September did he set the Leafs up for a compensatory draft pick? The NHL long ago nixed the compensatory draft pick for having NHL team coaches/executives signed away while still under contract, did they eliminate this as well?

No one needs to respond to this any time soon, but it will be a conversation we might be thinking about closer to June 2024

I was thinking about this yesterday after I read about Amirov passing away. Would rather have him alive, but with his passing I was thinking the league should award the Leafs a compensatory draft pick. It will be wrong if they don't, because losing a player is different.
