I was at the Leafs game in Toronto when they honoured him. I think it was season beginning in 2001/2002, or it was 2000/2001 season beginning. It has been over 22 years so I'm not sure I remember right, but I think that was when his jersey was raised to the rafters at ACC. Happy Birthday to the Big M.

My favorite Leaf when I was young, it would be interesting to see how good he might have become without the Imlach impact? His time with Det. and Mtl. showed how good he was but his absolute prime was wasted with TO.

Imlach and Ballard were both egomaniacs and ruined the franchise after ‘67.

January 8th my hockey idol Ronnie Ellis turned 79. I loved Ellis. My first sports hero. Back in 70's I could only watch Leafs vs Bruins. Rarely on nhl game of week. So I'd listen when I could to.leaf games on radio in a very cold cellar. Sometimes I could only hear games constantly fading in an out. Everyday I looked at newspaper box scores to see if Ronnie did anything. Got to meet him a couple of times for an autograph and a picture. He did not disappoint. Haven't liked a player as much since.
Happy birthday big M

I was broken hearted when he was traded, but the funny thing is for some reason one of guys who came to the Leafs, Normie Ullman became my new favorite player. I guess at that age, a broken heart doesn't last too long.

I read his book. There were times he felt glued to bench. Afraid to get on ice. Was such a battle at times

Was such a battle at times Strange, TO had Ellis and the Big M, head cases on the team at the same time, makes me wonder how many more there are/were throughout the NHL. 2 I can think of in the NHL now, on and off, Samsonov and Campbell.
