What was Lily doing, a good question but if he drops the puck right away Calgary goes in a TO's goalie uncontested, I think?
What really bothered me was Mitch's blind backward pass? into the center of the ice in TO's end late in the 3rd?
It's going to be interesting on Sat. against Vanc., TO hasn't had much of a problem with them in the past, why/how is that team so good this year, is it because the west is so weak?

Yeah wth was that pass all about? Jones was the star in the first 20 or its over right then/there. I was really impressed with Matthews after the goals. No big cheery smile. All business.

As horrible as they looked in the first period, I thought they actually played mostly well in the 2nd and 3rd. They dominated the second period, that was the best second period I've seen them play in a long time, maybe all season. Lots of sustained pressure, and they made better use of hemming in the opposition on the "long change" period -- something they were very effective at the last couple of years, this year not so much.
The two controversial plays (the allowed goal and the disallowed goal) were both weird. I wasn't happy about the Mangiapane goal being allowed to stand. It reminded me of McMann's disallowed goal a year ago. Player kicks the puck, and it goes in off an opponent. One is disallowed, one counts. We really need more consistent officiating in this league. At least the calls evened out and the Leafs won.

Saw whole sequence of disallowed hand pass Calgary goal.
Someone in organization is doing their job. 4 for 4 in challenges.
But the set up is typical leafs. Bertuzzi has time to get puck out of zone. Nope soft flip headed rt for the Calgary point man. Our team is so bad at getting pucks out of zone

Drilled into your head from PeeWee onward ... save your ass and go off the glass. When shooting it directly over the glass became I penalty, I learned to flip it hard straight up into the ceiling to relieve pressure and get a whistle.
The local Jr. team in years past used to have a drill where the players would practice flipping the puck out over the hanging scoreboard from various places in the defensive zone so in a home game it would be second nature.

Who exactly is coaching the defense? I know they are not prime top defensive players but they are nhl players and they should know how to get the puck out of the zone. Basic stuff. And that coach should hold players accountable. Wasn’t that what Keefe said was supposed to happen? Or is that just for Robertson & Kampf?

As far as I know it's Mike VanRyn

He doesn't seem to be doing a very good job. Maybe they need a new defense coach. One that will actually help the defensemen improve.

I don't believe it's a question of them not playing to best of their abilities Kazzie. I think they're giving it their all but there really isn't much talent there for the most part. It's not like they've been in a slump for a few weeks, the D has been bad all season. Sure, Keefe can sit a couple of them, but they won't be more talented after being benched. Beside who can the Leafs call up to replace them. There's nobody with the Marlies ready to make the jump or they already would have at this point. I'm sure Treliving is spending every waking moment trying to figure out a way to deal for even one good d-man. I'm really interested to see if he can pull a rabbit out of his hat.
