It doesn't hurt, for sure but Pitts won a Cup with a nondescript d, noname is a very apt name for their d in the 2016-17 Stanley Cup year, Ian Cole was their top scoring d-man in the playoffs 9 pts in 25 games, Hainsey was their 2nd best d-man, he played on their top d pairing.
Cole was the 10th highest scoring Penguin, 9 forwards had more than 9 points during their Cup run, defense keeps teams in the game but all teams need to score to win. I would be shocked if TO could somehow win the Cup playing 25 games and have more than 5 forwards with 9 or more points.
Even tho TO couldn't muster any offense outside of the core 4 forwards and sometimes Rielly, Dubie would bend over backwards to add d for the playoffs, TO's lack of forward depth was mostly never addressed, that needs to change.
TO paid out contracts totalling $16.5 mil. for Domi, Bert, Kampf, Reaves and Kling, TO could've had Hyman, Kadri, + for that kind of $s or Hyman, Micheyev, +, quality forwards that Dubie never seemed keen to extend, he seemed more content to annually bolster TO's d depth by buying cheap after FA started.
Trev takes over and he spends on forwards with a more physical edge, the physicality is needed but physicality is wasted on players that don't also have requisite skill, I think TO could probably win with the current d but TO's current forward group won't ever win a Cup, the $s is there, was always there, what was/is needed is the right manager and possibly coach.
Blaming the core 4 for what they were being paid was an easy out, an easy excuse to blame lack of success on, look at how well they have scored during the playoffs, proper support would've enabled better results, the core 3 deserve to be well compensated, sorry JT, better money management and better imagination will empower TO for the future. Paying Reaves and Kampf almost $4 mil. per isn't even close to proper management.
