I first heard about this rumor about a month ago but I appears the leafs are trying to address their depth issues by going after Maxim Tsyplakov a 25 year old Russian who has been playing in the KHL for the last 7 years. Tsyplakov a skilled right winger who at 6'3" and 190 LBS brings heaviness and physicality as well as goal scoring ability having scored 30 goals and 45 points in 58games for Spartak Moscow. Maxim Tsyplakov is a free agent at the end of the KHL season and already has met with senior members of Leafs management last week over Zoom. The Leafs are far from the only NHL team pursuing Tsyplakov but it an exciting development we need to keep an eye on. For those interested the full story is in the Athletic sports magazine written by Joshua Kloke but you need a subscription to read it.

What with the situation, do you think he will be allowed to leave Russia?

What with the situation, do you think he will be allowed to leave Russia? Pam I think you maybe referring to the draconian law Vladimir Putin introduced a couple of months ago which is intended to prevent Russian hockey players from coming to the NHL. I believe this is intended only for draft eligible Russians who would have to play 5 years in Russia before they could leave and come over to the NHL. Maxim Tsyplakov should be exempt from this law as he has already played 7 years in the KHL.

Prior to this year his highest goal total was 10 goals, his highest point total prior to this year 25 points, this year he has 30 goals and 45 points so thinking this year, his 7th in the KHL, is anything but a career year is magical, I'd say. He's going to be 26 next year.
The closest I can think of that TO had signed recently is Ilya Mikheyev who was 25 in his first NHL season, Mikh scored 21 goals in 2021/22 in 53 games, this was his best NHL season. Mikh was somewhat more consistent in the K offensively and skating has always been considered his strength, Tsyplakov isn't as fast.
I don't know if he'd be able to excel on TO's PP with the 15 to 30 seconds of PP time the 2nd unit gets in TO.

Leafs are scratching for good players on the cheap. They don’t have many other options. Tight to the cap, star players with NTC’s and very little assets in the draft department. Next stop…. beer league players😁.
