TSN is reporting that Robert Svehla has announced his retirement (although he has not officially signed the papers). Couple this with Glen Wesley's desire to return to Carolina next season and the almost inevitable Bryan McCabe holdout over a contract impass and the Leafs have absolutlely no defence for the coming year. I'm pumped. You?

okay if we're going to play assume, we'll assume that Wesley does go, and McCabe holds out (has no reason too, after that year last year).
you still have:
Jackman (not a number one, i know but decent) Kaberle Pilar Coliacicovo Lumme and Berg
plus there are the players (defense) we pick up via UFA signings. I'm prety sure that Quinn will be able to score two replace the two that we'll lose.

I've been behind BIG TIME the past week or so but my pc will be fixed any day now. Possibly even today. (When your buddy fixes it for free you don't quibble over a few days here/there.) The news over Svehla/Wesley is disheartening (sp) but not unexpected. I doubt that anybody aside from Carlo will be up next year but many things will depend on our gm. Unfortunately that is (hopefully) due for a change and it may be nec. for our very survival. It doesn't take much to figure out that Quinn is full of glee at the thought of moving his favourite pet even further up the food-chain. The danger is great that nothing will get done if Q is still in charge. Face it: He's got NO motivation other than watching his players play. Gotta go to gym. Be back.

okay Jackman (not a number one, i know but decent) Kaberle Pilar Coliacicovo Lumme and Berg Look at what you're saying here Lap. Most AHL teams have a better defence than what is on your list. Pilar may not ever play hockey again. Colaiacovo is a rookie coming off a serious injury and a bad second half of his last OHL season. Lumme is ... well what can possibly describe this misery. There are diseases more welcome in Toronto than this Finnish infliction. Out of all those you have named, only two have the desire to hit and one of those tends to do so sparingly. If Kaberle was any softer he would be tumbling with the towels in a laundry room dryer. And you think a couple of free agents (neither of whom will be Hatcher or DeVries) are going to make a difference? Shall I set the alarm or can you wake up on your own.

Lappi, This does not happen often, but I agree 100% with CL . Actually, CL, I've agreed with almost everything you've written the past 3 weeks. Can I join the ( Quinn = Satan Club yet? ;D ) IF Wesley & Svehla are not part of this team next year, and with McCabe probably sitting the first 20--50 games....we will have 1, yes, 1 NHL calibre D-man. Which is Kaberle. We all know that he is average at best....I say that, by combining his above average Offensive ability, with his below average Defensive ability.....yup, that turns into an average D-man! Our Defence truly will be a AVERAGE AHL defence. We may be able to score 3 goals per game, but I believe Eddie will be drunk the entire season...due to the frustration level he'll face. Either that, or he's in court on murder charges...I doubt he can handle another year of watching Lumme trip over his own feet....poor Eddie will snap!

I'm at home right now, drinking beer and singing that old Marianne Faithful ballad "As Tears Go By". The dog is sitting beside me howling in perfect harmony. If I felt any more flushed, I would feel like Rick Ley's face against Pat Quinn's butt.

If I felt any more flushed, I would feel like Rick Ley's face against Pat Quinn's butt. I had 3 beers in 90 minutes yesterday afternoon. Just imagine a lady that drinks an average of 2 beers in a calendar year and when she drinks it, it's only 1/2 a glass to 3/4 of a glass when she decides to consume some beer. I guess you can figure out what she is like after consuming 3 in 90 minutes. Actually, almost everyone at work was doing it too. We sort of had a party across the street yesterday afternoon, so I was drowning 2 sorrows at once - the Leafs and another one I can share later. No, Tom, I didn't driive until it was out of my system. I've had my quota for the year now, and it wasn't even Canadian.

I think I am more upset over Wesley not coming over Svehla. The last I heard, Wesley wanted to re-sign with the Leafs. The players were claiming there weren't the kind of problems that would divide the team and that the rumours were hogwash. So if the team isn't divided, why are both Svehla and Wesley backing out? Makes me wonder how much of what the players said to address the rumours were lies.

Toronto defence - Svehla, Wesley and even McCabe = YIKES! That would be enough to drive Ed Belfour over the edge again. I hope our GM doesn't take the stopgap approach to filling in the holes that our departing defencemen leave behind. Let's wait and see what Tannenbaum does when he takes over.

"brrrrrzt" i'm awake now thanks CL Lappi, This does not happen often, but I agree 100% with CL . Actually, CL, I've agreed with almost everything you've written the past 3 weeks. Either that, or he's in court on murder charges...I doubt he can handle another year of watching Lumme trip over his own feet....poor Eddie will snap! y'all i never said that, that defense will take us to the cup. that defense will take us through the year. i mean by the sounds of y'all, it's more like that's what we want to have happen. just to get through the year, w/o any mis-haps or anything. that defense core could do that. get through the year, and then settle. i'd just like to point out however, that Anahiem only has Sandish Ozlinish, and Minnisota has no one i can even name off the top of my head on defence, and look where they are. Farther then we are. if the defense plays it K.I.S.S. hockey, they can do a lot more then what we expect. It's not a championship defense core, as you put it an Average AHL, but it could be worse. it could be totally rookised. I forgot about Pilar and his heart so right, he won't be there, but who knows what happens during the off season... i dunno. i guess i like looking for the shiny side of the penny instead of the tarnish.

It could be worse? I'd like to know 1 other team, with a top 16 payroll, with a worse D?! ====================================== Anaheim: -Keith Carney -Ruslan Salei -Fredrik Olausson -Sandis Ozolinsh Those 4 guys, would make our D-core easiely. They are not all-stars ( Ozolinish is, but shouldn't be ), but as we all know, WE don't have any all-stars either! I'd rather have those 4 guys over: Berg, Jackman, Pilar, Carlo, Kaberle, Lumme --------------------- Minnesota: Has a bunch of no names on D, however, their game is based on Defense. Unlike any other team in this league, their fowards think D first. Even Gaborik has turend into a responsible player

name one? okay New York Rangers. and they should count. look, Jackman et.al won't make me sleep better at night, knowing that we can win 40+ games. Chances are w/that D, we'd be lucky to win 30+ games. However. if the whole team takes a step back and play a solidly defensive game, it won't matter as much as it would as if they would play now. Quinn getting the two year deal honoured, he knows that it's not going to be enough to do what he's doing, he'll need to be better defensively, which would lead me to believe he's targetting a couple of UFA Defensemen, and might trade for them.
