I'm not big on the Intermission entertainment at Hockey games. Most of it is annoying and a waste of good time.
However, I do enjoy it when it is the kids. Every so often the Sharks bring in a couple of the kids hockey teams that are around the area (anywhere from locally to 2 1/2 hours away), and have the kids play a short game. I really enjoy watching them, especially the little tykes.
Another thing the Sharks do is during one of the intermissions is have a puck hitting contest. The only time I enjoy that one is again when it is the kids, because the kids always walk away with a prize for their efforts.
Last Saturday as I was walking the concourse with my youngest grandson (9) L.J. one of the Tank Patrol came up to him and asked him if he wanted to go on ice during 2nd intermission for the puck hit (not the official name but I can't remember the official name). I had to sign a release for him. Then 7 minutes before Period 2 was over we had to meet at the elevator. There were 2 other kids as well. We went down to the tunnel area and came out by the ice at the visitor end. The kids had to go down to the home end of the ice and they had to hit the puck in the net in the visitor end. LJ was chosen 1st, so he had the 1st turn. Then the 2nd kid and then the 3rd kid. They had 3 shots to net the puck. LJ's first 2 shots were beautiful (he doesn't play hockey) and they ended up exactly where they should have for the next hit to end up in the net. When he had his 3rd shot it hit off the right post just like it does in a real game. The 3rd kid was a girl and her shot went behind the net. I'll make it short. They gave both the girl and LJ another chance and they netted the puck. LJ got a small Sharks (pull string) bag. Saturday night was "Ice Age" night so they got an Ice Age Poster, finger puppets of all the Ice Age characters and the Ice Age DVD. I took plenty of pictures. yeah they were rewarded for having to take an extra shot, but it was such a thrill for the non hockey playing kids to be out on the ice where the Sharks play that them being rewarded for an extra shot didn't make them think they got rewarded for taking that extra shot. I got to stand in the entrance way to the ice and it was so much fun to watch the kids with the BIG grins on their face.
LJ likes hockey, and has for a few years even though he is only 9, but after his experience on the ice last Saturday he is even more pumped about hockey than he was before. At least for him, that experience increased his love of hockey.
