Well maybe now that the Avs have broken down and signed two expensive UFA's, more teams will follow. This was all I could find about it. It's not on ESPN.com or TSN.com. More to follow after 2pm Mountain Time today. www.coloradoavalanche.com/features/feature1036311227.htmlThe Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club will hold a major press conference at Pepsi Center on Thursday, July 3 at 2:00pm. At that time, Colorado Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix will communicate the full details regarding the signing of unrestricted free agents Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne.

It finally showed up on TSN. I wonder if they took less money to be reunited in Colorado or if they really did break the bank. I have to agree Selanne's production in SJ didn't warrant his $6.5mil, and IMO his Playoff production was way below par in SJ. I always had a feeling he didn't produce as well here because he really didn't want to be in San Jose. I guess next season we will find out if he was holding out in SJ because he resented being sent here. www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=46230&hubName=nhlAvalanche sign Kariya and Selanne TSN.ca Staff 7/3/2003 While other teams have been practicing financial restraint in the early days of the free agent season, the Colorado Avalanche have broken the bank, signing superstars Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya. Both were unrestricted free agents. The move re-unites Selanne and Kariya, who were linemates with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim from 1994 until March 2001 when Selanne was traded to the San Jose Sharks. The Avalanche will make the official announcement at 4pm et. Colorado was expected to be shopping for a goaltender this off-season after future Hall-of-Famer Patrick Roy retired. Instead, the Avs made a bold move to add more weapons to an already potent offence. Kariya has scored 300 NHL goals and totaled 669 points in 606 games. After scoring just 25 goals and 81 points last season, Kariya did not receive a qualifying offer from the Ducks, who deemed his $10 million price tag to be far too high. Selanne has 436 goals and 919 points on 801 career NHL games. He scored 28 goals and 64 points last season with the Sharks, and San Jose decided that was not enough production for $6.5 million a year.

WOW, I'm surprised!!!!!!!
Now, the Rangers go out and blow all their money, every year on the best player(s). Yet they lose. That is due to team-chemistry. Most of the time, buying talent does not work. ( Not in Hockey, Baseball it does )
However, in this case, I think it will. The Avs just got 2 quality hockey players, and 2 quality human beings.
With a goalie, this team may just be un-touchable.
Forsberg/Hejduk/Tanguay
Sakic/Kariya/Selanne
IF they can replace DeVries and get a goalie...who can beat them? =======================================

Do you want to know the kicker that will make you puke on the floor? WDFN radio in Detroit is reporting that both Kariya and Selanne were signed for........... $7 million !!!!!!! [/i][/u] If this is true, Lacroix will have pulled off one ofthe biggest rape jobs in NHL history.

I thought Paul K was a restricted FA. Oh well. At first thought I was upset, but the more I think of it. These two are on the downside of their careers. Although Karyia is a heck of a player I think the concussions have really hampered his play. i would not really want Teemu at this stage of his career. Although over a guy like hoglund I guess it is an improvement.
If Hasek goes back to Detroit mayb poor old Curtis can catch on in Colorado for a year to try for his cup.

For anyone who paid attention in SJ, it was pretty well known Selanne would have preferred being with Paul instead of here. He tried to cover it, for the one's of us that paid attention to what he said and how he acted, we knew the truth. Now that he's back with Paul he will probably be happy again. All I can say is I hope it doesn't make the Avs untouchable. Do you want to know the kicker that will make you puke on the floor? Selanne may be on the downside of his career...heck, he never was the same after his 1st season Kariya however.....watch out guys, he will have a MONSTER year ( I hate Pierre McGuire ). Paul has been "the guy to cover" his entire career in Anaheim. Opposing teams would stick their top 2 D-men on him....even this past year. NOW, with all those great players on his team, he will be showing how good he is. Remember how well he played at the Olympics...once he clicked with his line-mates? He was awsome. Pammie, frame this and bring it out in just under 1 year, I'm making a bold prediction..... ;D ;D ;D ;D Forsberg/Thornton/Kariya/Bertuzzi Those 4, will be the players in the top 5 in scoring. Not sure which order it will be..depends on injury's & suspensions ( Bertuzzi/Thornton )

I hope you're kidding Pam.
I think Nazzy will be top 5 instead of Joe. But, I'm still going to take Mats Sundin's too well used golf clubs and shove them up Pat Quinn's arse for letting these 2 guys go by at that price.

Hey Shaner...good to see ya back!!!!
We have to remember one thing about Kariya and Selanne....
It looks like they wanted to go to the same team...even if it would mean taking a pay-cut.
Now, 7mill is not a lot...in NHL terms. However, it would have "wasted" our entire UFA "fund". Meaning, we'd start the year with only 3 "decent" ( if that ) NHL D-men. What good would those two ( Paul & Themu ) be, playing in front of
McCabe Kaberle Berg
Once we get our 2, hopefully 3 D-men signed, THEN we can see if we can get another forward

you know what the sad thing about this is? we so could have had him
1.2 million dollars 1.2.... 1....
seriously, i feel like crying that's Mats Winger RIGHT THERE 1 year, 1.2 million dollars, drop Renberg right off the top line
holy crap.
the saddest thing about this is, quinn stated yesterday that ALL UFA's wanted big money and long years.
look at Kariya. (sob)
