Well it's official William Nylander has signed, the contract is 11.5 million for 8 years with a full no move clause. Personally I'm not sure how I feel about the deal. Yes I'm happy he's signed and willl remain a leaf but I can't imagine how the leafs will be able to build a competitive roaster with 4 guys making 11 million each, and yes before anybody reminds me Marner technically isn't making 11 million it's 10.9

After giving this some thought, here's how I see it. Nylander's full NMC doesn't kick in until his new contract starts on July 1 (or whatever date new contracts start on) On his current contract he has a 10-team no trade clause.
Nylander and his new 8 year deal is a tradeable asset up to that date. If he went to UFA status, the max term would have been 7 years, so a player under 8 year contract might be coveted by another team looking for scoring. Once the off-season starts, this might be a point of conversation approaching the entry draft.

Once the off-season starts, this might be a point of conversation approaching the entry draft. Pretty sure they didn't sign him just so they could trade him. Sure, that happened with Tkachuk, but that kind of sign-and-trade is rare, and I don't remember ever seeing a sign-and-trade there the trade happened 5-6 months after the signing. They probably could have signed him in the summer for closer to $10m per year. But with the year he's having, it became pretty obvious that he wasn't going to get signed for less than 11. Also, the reality is that Nylander's current offer turned out to be a massive underpay. I would have a hard time saying that he hasn't earned his right to this payday. Of course, all eyes will be on Marner now. But when you look at my previous point -- there's no way that anyone can say that Marner's current deal undervalues him. They might offer him a nominal raise on his next contract, but I really can't see the team paying him more than Matthews, and maybe not more than Nylander. And yes, my preference would be to see them trade Marner.

No, I don't think he was signed to be traded. But he is definitely more of a trade asset now than he was under pending UFA status. So I expect this to be a heated topic of discussion in the days before his new deal kicks in. As his previous contract was a bit of an underpay (hometown discount?), he didn't do anyone any favours this time around.
I agree, a deal in the summer would have been better, but if his new contract was already completed I doubt he has the year he's been having. Contract year Willie is a fantastic player, I just hope that's the same player he is moving forward.

I have been a fan of Willy for years. Many times I tried to defend him while most were frustrated. Always stood by him. His current contract was great for team but obviously he needed the raise. But a NM for 11.5 for 8 years is too much for my liking. Marners will be worse.
To me it shows greed and caring about getting paid. 34 88 and 16 can't care too much about being a champion or they all would take less for good of team. Hasn't Sid done that forever?
Treliving is in a tough spot. Cannot let him enter ufa status then lose him for nothing.
I know the cap goes up etc. But so do these big salaries.
A recipe for losing. Something we are good at

Love Willy, love his style and swagger but I wish the term was shorter and the money quite frankly was lower. But I was pissed at him when he held out last contract and he’s done nothing but get better. How management manoeuvres thru next season is beyond me. I don’t care but somehow they have to find a way to do better than one playoff round in however many years.🤦♂️

I’m happy we are keeping Willy. Is it for too much and for too long? Time will tell. It really doesn’t matter what I think because it changes absolutely nothing.

Next year 4 players making $11 million or more, going to mean lots of change. Next year.

Something we are good at 11.5 is the price you pay for not getting it done in the summer but that no movement for eight years will ultimately be the fly in the ointment. Yes, the cap keeps going up but you are so right bc the big boys just keep taking a bigger piece of the pie every da*n time and Mitch will get 12 and a NM clause as well. You 100% know that.

Marner getting 12 Million hmmmm, that one I have a problem with. Marner is an interesting player, talented to be sure but one wonders just how he would be viewed if he did not have Matthews to pass to. I think he would be consider a good NHL winger, probably a very good winger, but at the same time he wouldn’t be a 10.9 million dollar, nor a 12 million dollar player. If 12 million is Marner price I say let him walk and use the savings to sign a couple of good free agent defensemen.

Might be BT’s only option to let him walk unless he agreed to a trade which is the way I’d prefer if it has to happen. Will be interesting to see how they handle Tavares when his deal is up.

I'm with you Tman I would much prefer to see Marner traded rather than just walking away from him. John Tavares with be turning 35 after next season and at that age I would think it's time to move on from John Tavares and put the money to a better use.

I really like Nylander and appreciate the career season he's having, but I agree with those saying 8 years is too much. It's just real easy to see the contract become a nightmare for Toronto unless the salary cap goes thru the roof in the next few years. I mean how many of us have complained about Tavares contract killing the Leafs. I can't see how paying the core four this much next year will leave any money to improve the defense, and possibly goaltending.

Leafs won’t walk away from Tavares I don’t think. It would be pretty classless to just give him the flick. If he wants to retire a Leaf sign a cheap deal, let Matthews be Captain and give JT an A. Of all the core 4 JT would be the most likely one to sign a hometown deal. Keeping Marner will depend a lot on what Tavares does.
